New Product Announcement: Garmin fēnix

fenix

The Garmin fēnix is almost here! The Garmin fēnix is the first GPS navigator+ABC wristwatch to include Garmin GPS navigation. Designed for outdoor enthusiasts, it satisfies the strict requirements of the serious adventurer. It’s very easy to use and packed with many of the same features found on Garmin's popular outdoor handheld GPS products. As a true GPS navigator, it can guide you off the trail and back to the safety of your vehicle, trailhead, campsite or home. All while conveniently strapped to your wrist.
You can create and follow routes, mark up to 1,000 waypoints, store up to 10,000 track points, and actually navigate to them. Share data wirelessly with other compatible Garmin GPS units and smartphones. Naturally, as a navigating GPS+ABC watch, it also includes altimeter, barometer, 3-axis electronic compass and temperature sensor. Rugged, stylish and waterproof to 50m, it’s as comfortable in the cement, steel and glass jungle as it is escaping the beaten path to life’s greatest adventures.

Key Features
• Navigation by Garmin
No other navigator GPS+ABC wristwatch offers you the GPS navigation capabilities of Garmin -- The world’s most trusted name in GPS navigation.  fēnix tracks where you have been, but it can also guide you into the wilderness and, more importantly, guide you back out again. After all, what good does it do you to collect data, if you can’t use it to find your way back to your computer to download it?

It records a track log creating a GPS “bread crumb trail” as you move. It also allows you to mark waypoints such as your campsite, vehicle location, or other points of interest. With fēnix, you can create and follow routes, mark up to 1,000 waypoints, store up to 10k track points. You can even create routes that can be downloaded to fēnix from Garmin BaseCamp free trip-planning software, from a computer. Then, just follow the navigation arrow to waypoints. To get back, just have TracBack show you the way.

• Chronometer
Rugged and attractive, the fēnix is also a highly accurate timepiece that can be worn everyday. It includes settings for alarms, chimes, and vibration alerts. It also functions as a timer, stopwatch and world clock.

• Altimeterfloat
fēnix has a built-in barometric altimeter that provides accurate elevation information so you can keep track of your ascent and descent.
• Barometer
The built-in barometer can help you monitor and predict weather changes by showing you short-term changes in the barometric air pressure. If the barometric pressure begins a steady decline, this could be a warning of an impending storm.
• Compass
fēnix includes a 3-axis electronic compass that shows your bearing from any position or attitude even when you’re not moving.

• Temperature Sensor
You can gain insight into temperature trends from the built-in temperature sensor.  Knowing how rapidly the temperature is rising or falling can help you determine clothing and shelter needs or whether it’s time to turn back.

• Wireless unit-to-unit communication
You can easily share tracks, waypoints, routes and paperless geocaches wirelessly with other compatible Garmin GPS units and smartphones. fēnix is equipped with both ANT+ capabilities and Bluetooth® technology. That means you can also pair fēnix with several external devices, such as:

• Tempe external temperature sensor attaches to your pack, jacket, shoes, etc. to provide even more accurate ambient temperature readings not affected by your body heat (sold separately).

• Garmin heart rate monitor that give you heart rate information.

• Speed/Cadence sensor tracks your distance, speed and pedal cadence.

Specifications
• Rugged, tough outdoor watch with a mineral glass lens to resist scratching and a high-strength thermoplastic alloy housing to survive shocks
• Fashionable everyday watch with stainless steel case and buttons along with stylishly designed and coloured polyurethane bands (leather band offered as an optional accessory)
• Waterproof to 50m
• Li-ion battery: Watch mode: 6-weeks / Sensor mode: 3-weeks / GPS mode: 16 to 50 hours depending on tracklog frequency
• Watch features: time of day, stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms, vibration alerts
• Wireless sharing (Bluetooth) to other devices for enhanced features.
• Compass, Barometer, Altimeter, Temperature on watch (plot vs. time)

Suunto Ambit owners will find a wealth of new enhanced navigation features and friendly improvements in the software update 1.5. It will further strengthen especially the navigation and GPS functionalities. The update includes new features, such as:

Route creation and navigation based on waypoints:
You can create a route based on individual waypoints in Movescount.com. Download the route to your Ambit and navigate through it waypoint by waypoint. Ambit notifies you when you have reached a waypoint and guides you to the next. Release 1.5 also enhances navigation by showing the name of the waypoint you are heading towards.

Points of Interest (POIs):
In addition to route navigation you can still create individual Points Of Interest and navigate to them. In Release 1.5 POIs can be added manually independent of your location. Stored POIs are categorized according to type, making it easier to search POIs in a list.

Better views:
Compass and Navigation views are now accessible also in exercising mode.

UPDATE: Suunto Ambit Heart Rate Belt Clarification and new Firmware releases schedule

A major question recently has been centered around which Heart Rate Belts work with the new Ambit. Below is some details clarifying the use of existing Dual Belts, as used with Quest and the M-series, and the new Suunto ANT belt which is being shipped with the Ambit.

The Suunto Dual Belt has been designed to be used with Fitness/Training products whereas the new Suunto ANT belt is better suited for the needs of Ambit target consumer segment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Suunto have clarified that the AMBIT can be used with Suunto Dual Belt. So, if a customer already owns a Dual Belt or want to use/purchase a Dual Belt instead of the Suunto ANT Belt he/she can do so.

The difference between the new Suunto ANT Belt and Dual Belt is that the Dual Belt is compliant with selected gym equipment and the new ANT Belt is not.
The differences between the new Suunto ANT Belt and the old Suunto ANT Belt and are the following:
1)      new ANT belt with AMBIT uses different (significantly better) filter for heart rate data
2)      it includes the so called Sensor ID number in the message sent by the belt
3)      includes special pairing bit (used by Quest & M-Series), that’s irrelevant for proximity pairing used by Ambit
4)      important visual difference: Sensor ID is laser marked on the back of the module, near the serial number

Also the FAQ section on Suuntos website has been updated on AMBIT. The updated content in the FAQ 1.5 is the following:
1)      The answer to the question about what HR belts Ambit supports has been modified
2)      A clarification has been added that the promise of log time of 16h with all recordings on doesn’t include having autolaps on.
3)      Added Q and A about the fact that Ambit needs to be in TIME mode when you transfer logs or settings to/from Movescount.
4)      Added instructions for how to put off the time sync from PC

AMBIT 1.5 Software update release content - to be launched in May 2012
As promised, AMBIT features will be enhanced over time through SW-updates.

Suunto’s plan for the content of AMBIT SW 1.5 release in the end of May 2012 is the following:
·        Route creation and navigation based on waypoints
·        Improvements in how waypoints are named and listed
·        Improvements in how compass and navigation can be used while exercising
·        Manual adding of waypoints directly in Ambit
·        Some additional local grids and datums

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The above listing of AMBIT SW 1.5 release content is subject to change! Stay tuned.

·        During May’12 we will announce the tentative listing of the new features in the upcoming AMBIT SW 2.0 release - targeted to launch in October’12. This AMBIT 2.0 SW release in October’12 will have a much bigger scope in comparison to the 1.5 SW release.
·        By 21st March we’ll open the ambit@suunto.com<mailto:ambit@suunto.com> feedback channel for you, trade customers and consumers. Information on this opportunity will be found on the bottom right corner of the AMBIT web page at suunto.com.
AMBIT Manuals and How to Use Videos now available
·        Ambit manual is now available at suunto.com on the Ambit product pages.
